Jesus was crucified for the sins of the world. Those who repent, are baptized, and are spiritually reborn by the sanctifying influence of the Holy Ghost become joint heirs with Jesus Christ whose crucifixion pays for their sins. The Savior’s death resulting from his crucifixion was the penalty humankind brought upon themselves because of their sinful natures. Those who have claim on the Savior’s mercy can inherit the celestial or terrestrial kingdoms. D&C sections 76 and 88 explain it.
According to D&C 19:16 -18 those who will not repent must suffer even as Jesus suffered in Gethsemane when blood dripped from every pore. They suffer for their own sins, but they do not atone for their own sins.
We must not impute something to their suffering which suffering alone cannot claim. Study D&C sections 76 and 88 and you will see that those who must suffer for their own sins can inherit the telestial kingdom, but only if they have been changed by that suffering in such a way that they will be able to abide the law of a telestial kingdom. Their suffering must transform them or they will not be eligible to inherit a kingdom of glory. Suffering can be merely punitive, or it can also result in a transformation. The Savior’s suffering on the cross was obviously punishment. But, what was the Savior’s suffering in Gethsemane?
Mosiah 3:7 explains the Savior’s suffering in the Garden, “... blood cometh from every pore, so great shall be his anguish for the wickedness and the abominations of his people.” King Benjamin quoted an angel who told him that the Savior suffered in Gethsemane because he was contemplating the wickedness and the abominations of his people. This suffering is typified as that which the unrepentant ungodly must endure. They cannot be required to endure the pain of crucifixion for 1,000 years as they await the final judgment for they will be without mortal bodies. That suffering in the Garden was not typified by King Benjamin as atonement. It took Jesus through the doubts he had about submitting to the Father’s will. In similar fashion, the suffering of the wicked must take them through their unwillingness to submit to the laws of the telestial kingdom. They have 1,000 years to decide whether they want to set aside their evil dispositions in order to inherit the telestial kingdom or stubbornly hold on to their evil natures and be caste out and suffer eternally.
