Some of those best known for telling it like it is have been failing to support President Bush on some vital issues. In the case of the Immigration Bill the lack of support has gone all the way to extreme attacks. It was about June 14th when I heard Laura Ingraham interview Tony Snow. Even though Mr. Snow has been proclaiming for several weeks if not several months that 78 plus miles of fence have been completed on our southern border Ms Ingraham was still accusing President Bush of only completing three miles of fence. As a matter of fact, Mr. Snow’s objection to the claim that only three miles of fence had been completed was one of the few answers Tony gave without Ms Ingraham calling him a liar.
As I listened to the Laura Ingraham show about June 14th I could not distinguish between her attack on Tony Snow and the hate filled rhetoric of the radical fringe of the Left when they shout “Bush lied, people died”. She was continually talking over Tony Snow and her most frequent answer to his explanations was “I don’t believe you”. Her efforts succeeded in making her listeners deaf to Mr. Snow’s descriptions of increased efforts and successes at emptying work places of illegal aliens, stopping more illegal attempts at crossing our borders, and extending the fence along our southern border. They did hear his report of spending more money to control our borders, but Ms Ingraham succeeded in turning that into something to complain about. When the calls and e-mails came in what I heard was the same kind of vitriol and ignorance of the facts that I hear when brainwashed radical Left Wingers call in to spew out their ignorant diatribes. Though more scholarly and less emotional Conservatives have attempted to make detailed descriptions of why they believe the Immigration Bill will not work, Ms Ingraham was not relying on those wordy invitations to distrust the government. She said it plainly and clearly, “We don’t trust you”, and “We don’t believe you.”On June 20th Ms Ingraham stated that President Bush was destroying the Republican Party. With the help of some others Ms Ingraham has whipped her listeners into such a blind and deaf rage that our Democrat controlled congress will not be able to put together an immigration bill which will satisfy them. I suspect that there are a great many Conservative, Independent, and Libertarian voters so consumed with anger over the immigration bill that we may never be able to win them back to voting Republican. Matter of fact, lack of trust in the government is such a major theme in the angry talk about the immigration bill that I can’t help but wonder if the anti illegal immigration crowd isn’t more likely to join an armed rebellion than ever vote again.
July 3rd Laura Ingraham, when someone made reference to the special ID Cards mentioned in the Immigration Bill, said something like “We have enough laws already, if employers will go to a little extra effort there is no need for special ID Cards.” Ms Ingraham knows that twenty major cities are sanctuaries for illegal aliens. She also knows that many employers are not interested in going to any extra effort to identify illegal aliens. Her show is in danger of becoming just another anti-establishment rant full of lies and hyperbole.
Liberal municipalities, and greedy business owners invited the illegal immigrants to this country. If we insist on completely rejecting amnesty and typify as amnesty any and every effort to make it possible for some of these illegal immigrants to eventually become citizens or temporary workers (whichever they prefer or qualify for), then we will find that we have created an enormous coalition against us. Many of that majority of voters who are in favor of stopping illegal immigration look upon some of those illegal immigrants as victims and don’t want them indiscriminately kicked out of this country. Ms Ingraham knows this, but she has become drunk with power as she tells the angry crowd what they want to hear and listens to their angry roars.
But why should they allow President Bush any slack on the immigration problem when they never did on deficit spending. Republicans, right along with Democrats were complaining about the economy and all the jobs that were leaving the country, but they were not willing to acknowledge the boost to the economy that has come from deficit spending. Matter of fact, I’m beginning to think that some of the Stockholm Syndrome mechanisms are in play here because we seem to be as willing to eat our own as to attack the enemy.
A well known clergyman blamed the liberals for the terrorist attack on 911 and was forced to retract his statement which was only right and proper since he did grossly overstate the matter. However, is anyone talking about a serious secondary problem? Is anyone asking why the radical Islamic terrorists are receiving so much support from moderate Moslems? When the Jihadists call us devils aren’t their accusations made more credible by the successful Liberal attack on our culture? Our public schools teach their children that all sexual lifestyles are equally acceptable. Pornography is rampant and popular public dress standards border on the pornographic.
Fewer and fewer are sticking up for President Bush’s handling of the War on Terrorism. It seems to be unanimous now, President Bush wasn’t prepared for the insurgency. Is no one asking how much effect the huge antiwar effort in this country had on the people of Iraq? Liberals did their best to see that the people of Iraq would expect us to desert them like we did the Vietnamese. It was often difficult to tell whether negative talk about the war was originating with the terrorists or with the Democrats as their talking points were so nearly identical. Under such conditions how can we blame the people of Iraq for placing sectarian unity above national interests. The political waters became so bloodied that confused voters gave Republicans a beating in the 2006 elections.
Whatever happened to the idea that politics ends at the waters edge? With encouragement from leading Democrats the anti war crowd has been undermining the war in Iraq from the very beginning. We did nothing to shut them up. That did not stop them from screaming and crying what a terrible thing it was that they had been abused for speaking out, the blasted liars. You might say that their lies were a preemptive strike because they knew that they deserved to be told to shut their lying traitorous mouths. It worked too. The complaining against President Bush became so widespread that now everyone is doing it including Conservative talk show hosts. I think that Michael Medved is the only one who is using a reasonable amount of restraint in criticizing President Bush. I was disappointed to hear my favorite financial planner/political commentator imply that recent emphasis on the dividing up of Iraq’s oil profits was unimportant, and outright accuse the Bush Administration of making it just another excuse that’s been dreamed up to extend our stay in Iraq. What an asinine thing to say. Then he started quoting someone’s idea of what President Bush should do to win the war. I’m disappointed in nearly every blasted one of you. You don’t trust him to figure out how to win in Iraq, you not only made it clear that you don’t trust him to fix the immigration problem, but did your best to fire up all the anti government groups and Mexican hating red necks while you did it. If the Immigration Bill remained the topic of the day most of you would be just another bunch of rabble rousers.
